More Lana'i:
Back
The Koele Collection
On display throughout the Lodge at Koele, the collection of art, crafts, antiques and artifacts is a wonder. Many of the pieces are museum-quality, some were commissioned from Lana'i artists. Of particular note are the Tibetan horses, Chinese altar tables and ceremonial weapons; armoires, chests and chairs from the 18th and 19th centuries, and traditional Hawaiian quilted pillows. Local artisans have painted intricate details on the door surrounds, the ceilings and the floors.
The Great Hall is filled with interesting accessories, including a 19th century Chinese enamel figure, Burmese candlesticks, an Islamic trunk, Thai rain drums and a 7-panel screen painted with tumbling acrobats. Tibetan symbols, and Hawaiian fruits and flowers inspired the subtly colored rugs and carpets. Floors are of exotic woods such as chocolate heart eucalyptus. Hand-painted ceilings and walls depict local flora, faux woven cane, Hawaiian and European themes, and a reproduction of Captain Cook's 1779 map of the Sandwich Isles.
